Tata Electronics has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Synopsys, a California-based semiconductor design and engineering firm, to collaborate on a variety of technology verticals. The cooperation would see Synopsys' offerings used in Tata Electronics' new $10.9 billion semiconductor production unit, or fab, in Dholera, Gujarat, which was announced on February 29.

As part of the agreement, Tata Electronics will use Synopsys' foundry design platform to help ramp up designing custom semiconductor devices for clients once the fab is completed. Other areas of technology in which the two companies will collaborate include factory automation, data analytics, computer-aided design and technology transfer from Synopsys to Tata Electronics, Synopsys' supply of product design kits, and the development of intellectual property for the chip fab once it is operational.

Randhir Thakur, chief executive and managing director of the Bengaluru-registered Tata Electronics, said in a statement that the move will help the company offer “"‹"‹integrated solutions across the electronics manufacturing value chain to global customers seeking a resilient supply chain."

Tata's Dholera fab was approved by the Union Cabinet on February 29 as part of the government's Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India, with Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (PSMC) serving as the principal technical partner. At the time, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that once fully operational, the plant would create 3 billion chips per year, with nodes spanning from 28nm to 90nm.
